Algeria rejects 24 Russian Mig-29 Jet fighters

Russian Defence Ministry bought 24 new Mig-29 Jet fighters with the total value of 535m euro, the equivalent of 25 billion roubles, Sergei Ivanov, Russian Deputy PM said Monday. 

  • These military aircrafts, were manufactured by Russia after a request by Algeria March 2006 during Vladimir Putin’s visit to Algeria, however, Algerian army announced in 2008 that it rejected its request because the new military aircrafts contained old equipments.

  • The deal consists of 34 Mig-29 Jet fighters worth 987m euro. The Russian Defence Ministry contracted with the Russian factory in order to buy other military aircrafts, including six aircrafts for training and fight type Mig-29, to export them to Algeria.

  • “These military aircrafts were tested in Russia and experts confirmed their high quality which prompted leaders of the Russian Air Forces to agree on getting them.

  • Previously, Russian Daily Kommersant newspaper, reported that Algeria rejected its request of buying Mig-29 Jet fighters because they contained old electronic equipments.
