Algeria students voice anger over Gaza attacks

Hundreds of students gathered at a number of universities in Algeria on Sunday to protest against Israeli deadly attacks on Gaza.

  •
  • Policemen surrounded Youcef Ben Kheda University in Algiers as dozens of students called for allowing them taking to the streets for a “peaceful march.”
  •
  • At Science and Technology university, more than four thousand students took part in a demonstration over Gaza bombings, calling for an “Algerian honourable position.”
  •
  • They burnt an Israeli flag and contributed in a one million signatures campaign, urging Muslim countries to boycott diplomatic relations with Israel.
  •
  • Some 25 students including six Palestinians were arrested at a university in Batna (east of Algeria) after they had joined a march over the Israeli offensive on Gaza along with hundreds of students.
  •
  • Security forces stopped the protesters who tried to walk outside the university, raising Palestinian flags and denouncing the Arab and international silence over the Israeli offensive.
  •
  • The government banned demonstrations in 2001 following bloody clashes between security forces and protestors in a demonstration organised by Berber activists.
