Algerian Agriculture Minister Rachid Ben Aissa gave instructions to the local administartion in his sector to make farmers and agricultural products traders to pull out 122 thousands tons of stored potatoes throughout the country to help curb the upsurging prices of this food in local markets.

  • “The minister has made this decision due to the increase of potatoes price in some markets,” the press attaché at the ministry told Echorouk.
  • “It is meant to bring back stability to markets”, he said.
  • The storage system in Algeria is designed for a multi-dimensional strategy, to protect farmers on the one hand and consumers as well, according to the ministry s executive.
  • Earlier this year Algeria witnessed a big shortage in potatoes which led  to an unprecedent price upsurge. The government had to import large quatities to ease the crisis. The ministry had recently announced that more than 30 thousands were stored in a record time.
