Algeria to respond to UN commission

The Algerian delegation is set to respond tomorrow to a UN commission against torture concerning the demand of this later to lift the emergency state implemented since 1992 in Algeria .

According to a well informed source, it is illogical to talk about the lifting of the emergency state in Algeria and putting aside the problems and hurdles as well as the responsibility of the state in guaranteeing the conditions for the protection and the promotion of basic rights in Algeria .

The same source added that the 1992 law concerning the emergency state has been implicitly nullified by the integration of some provisions in the penal code, mentioning “the emergency state was characterized by a series of laws implemented by the Algerian authorities to fight against terrorism, but not to tighten the citizens’ freedom”.

Moreover, the source said, the prevailing security situation in Algeria requires exceptional measures to fight against terrorism, especially against the threats of the so called “Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb”, which carried out a series of attacks which hundreds of deaths among civilians and damage in the country.
