Algeria’s imports of cement and iron doubled in 2009

Estimates released by the National Office for Statistics and Information reveal that Algeria has paid billions of Dollars for the import of cement and iron.

  • The Algerian authorities have doubled their imports of these building materials across the first quarter of the year 2009 in comparison with the 2007 and 2008 in the same period. The bill was estimated at $US 2.17 billions in 2008 representing 77% of the total imports of cereals
  • Whose total bill is valued at $US 3 billions a year.

  • The prices of these building materials skyrocketed on the international markets over the year 2008 soaring coasts to more than 100%.

  • Algeria imported in the first quarter of the year 2009 something like 1.44 billion tons of cement and iron with a value of $US 700 millions, compared with 767 million tons in 2008 at a coast of $US516,5 millions.
  • Spain takes the lead before Turkey and Bulgaria as main suppliers

  • Algeria has imported 683 million and 702 thousand tons of iron during the first quarter of the year 2009 with a value estimated at $US 1, 4 billions while it has imported 1,63 billion tons in 2007, at a coast estimated at $1,1US billions doubling thus the quantity of its imports.

  • Spain stands as the first Algerian supplier as concerns iron with a total of 299 million tons valued at $US 510, 7 billions during the first quarter of the year 2009.

  • Turkey comes at the second position with 67 million tons for the same period valued at $ US206 millions, then comes Bulgaria whose imports shrank totalling 43,1 million tons at a value of $US 82,8 millions.

  • The Algeria authorities imported 68 million tons of cement used for the construction of dams, pools and other industrial facilities under the sea with a total value estimated at some $US 9 billions during the first quarter of 2009.
