Algerian and African illegal immigrants led an insurgency Gallerio refugee camp

A popular uprising led by Africans and Algerians, detained between six and twelve months, broke out the day before yesterday in the refugee camp of the province of Ponte Gallerio in the Italian capital city, Rome, to denounce the inhuman living conditions there.

  • The protesters burnt blankets and mattresses causing important damage and thick smock that led to several cases of asphyxiations. The refugees asked the Italian authorities to make an end to their sufferings inside this camp after dwelling much longer than it was expected.
  • The illegal immigrants were supposed to live the camp and repatriated to their home countries after three months, but most of them have been sequestered there for more than a year without any light of hope to be transferred.
  • This rebellion was meant by to raise the Italian authorities’ awareness, as it was the case before when two similar uprisings took place in the camps of “Cagliari” and Lampedusa”.
  • The Italian Prime Minister, Roberto Marroni, has admitted that despite tremendous efforts deployed by the camp’s mangers to assure descent living conditions for the detainees the situation didn’t live up to the expectations.
  • He has indicated that the detention long period has turned the camp into psychological prison for the refugees. On the other hand the Italian Farmers’ Union has announced that the companies willing to employ seasonal workers outside the European Union can send their requests to the Union as from the day before yesterday.
  • The program is part of project endorsed by the Italian interior ministry to attract 80 thousand seasonal workers outside the EU to offset the deficit of the workforce pending the spring and harvest seasons.
  • This decision could reignite the illegal immigration phenomenon from the Algerian to the Italian shores after a long period of lethargy.
