Algerian Army foils suicide bombing, seizes 800 kg of explosives
Informed sources told Echorouk that Algerian troops of the National Popular Army discovered last Wednesday a vehicle laden with 800 kg of explosives near the locality of Taguenmecht, about 65 km from the eastern city of Tizi Ouzou.
The same sources said that the booby-trapped car Toyota Helix bad been spotted by a hovering Army helicopter on the side of a road in the above mentioned locality.
After a close search on the ground, the Algerian troops found inside the car a quantity of about 800 kg of explosives in the shape of 18 batteries of the “pile plate” type ready to be detonated.
A special bomb disposal squad was brought in to defuse the booby- trapped vehicle after relentless efforts which lasted about 4 hours.
The car, stripped of its explosive load, was later exploded safely.
According to security sources, the car was scheduled to serve in a suicide bomb attack late Wednesday or early Thursday against the main police station in the area.
Security services were on the look out for a week after securing information that a terrorist group was planning a suicide bombing in the region.
