Algerian authorities pledge to regulate shipping activities after 10 years of anarchy

The government has ordered the security forces to expand the investigations launched at a level of the ports of Algiers and Oran to the 11 ports across the country as part of the all-out revision of the mutual agreements sealed between the different directorates and the private operators under the tutelage of the transportation Ministry.

  •
  • The government’s move came as a result of several illegal transactions registered at the port of Algiers where nearly 10 of its managers were put remanded in custody including the General Manager, his predecessor and several others accused of sealing mutual agreements with private operators through bribery.
  •
  • Other top managers in the port of Oran were remanded in custody for the same reasons and an inquiry is underway to investigate on the port’s activities since the 2000 until now.
  •
  • These investigations will be expanded to the ports of Tenes, Bejaia, Ghazaouet, Djijel, Skikda, Arziou, Beni Saf, Mostaghanem and Annaba and will look into the agreements sealed with private and foreign shipping companies which benefitted from various advantages at the expense of Algerian public companies.
  •
  • A top manager in knowledge with the case has revealed that some foreign companies were granted the permit to use some equipment belonging to the Algerian public companies inside the ports for their imports and exports activities in addition to warehouses and also the creation of units for polluting products by mutual agreements, although it is forbidden by the Algerian legislation.
