Algerian authorities to import 5.2 million tons of cement to put a curb on the speculators
The Ministry of Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises has decided to import 2.5 million tons of cement as from next October in a move to offset the shortage and face up to the speculators on the domestic market ahead of the rise on the demand on this product by the launching of the five-year plan.

The national production capacity of this product is due to rise in the horizon 2011 with the launching of a new facility in the province of Djelfa ( southern Algeria) as part of a joint venture with 3 million tons per year in addition to two other facilities owned by the group “Sonatrach” in the province of Bechar and Ghilizane.

This is the second time that the Algerian authorities decide to import after a first operation that took place last November where 1 million tons were brought from abroad. This action is designed to face up to the growing demand on this strategic construction material.

The gross national product of cement has reached a total of 18, 243 million tons in comparison with 5. 11 millions over the year 2009 produced by the 12 national companies.

Cement Algeria Group has invested 1.41 million Euros to raise its production capacity to 20 million tons per year.
