Algerian authorities vow to fight against potato speculators during Ramadhan
The head of the communication systems at the agriculture and rural development ministry, Idir Bayes, yesterday announced that 100 thousand tons of potatoes have been stored over a month since the implementation of the new system of management of large consumption products, with the view to assure a steady market supply and protect the farmers’ incomes as well as the citizens’ purchasing power.

The new system aims at storing 150 thousand tons of potatoes by August 15, with the help of 200 operators, possessing cold storage capacities, scattered over 25 towns country wide.

Talking on the margin of a meeting held between the Algerian agriculture minister and the operators, M Bayes declared that the Algerian authorities pay the producers 20 Algerian Dinars per kilogram while the price on the market varies between 5 to 18 Algerian Dinars depending on the supply and demand rule.
