Algerian company Sonelgaz counts billion of loses on account of piracy
While sources close to the Algerian Electricity Company “Sonelgaz†have revealed that the bulk of loses due to the illegal use of electricity is estimated at 10 billion Algerian Dinars, other reports talk about a loss at a level of 17% and 7% is linked to technical problems while the remaining percentage was the consequences of the illegal use in the areas of the country.

The national gendarmerie have succeeded in many occasions to dismantle groups specialized in the misappropriation of electricity in the isolated regions causing important financial loses to the mother company.

The commander of the gendarmerie group of the province of Biskra (southern Algeria), Captain Remli Abdelkrim has indicated that the phenomenon has reached alarming proportions especially in the remote regions like “Ourel” and “Rass Al Miaad” 200 km far from the main province.

Our presence in the province of Biskra coincided with the arrest of an individual by the gendarmerie elements operating within a group specialized in power trafficking at the expense of innocent inhabitants of the region; through the use of electric meters not identified in the company’s records in exchange of fake of bills.

The wrongdoer was arrested in a possession of 57 electric meters (26) digital and (31) mechanic ones, copper electric cables and other equipment. The culprit was brought to justice on charges of fraud, theft and identity usurpation and put in jail pending the completion of the investigation to unmask the gang operating in the region.
