Algerian detainees in Libya create dissentions among top officials
Farouk Kessentini

The Algerian Human Rights League president M Boudjemaa Ghachir yesterday accused the head of the Committee for Human Right’s Promotion, Farouk Kessentini, of “misleading the families of the Algerian detainees in Libya concerning their release”, while M Kessentini made an all out denial adding that he was only reporting a top foreign ministry’s declarations.

  • Both officials exchanged criticisms as concerns the Algerian detainees in Libya following the release of 28 prisoners out of the 52.
  •
  • According to M Ghachir, the file was handled by “ people, legally unfit, and do not posses diplomatic abilities, since the families get in touch with the Human Rights Promotion Committee with the view to release their relatives, while this decision has to be taken by the highest authorities at its convenience, because the prisoners didn’t serve the full term”.
  •
  • He added that M kessentini lured the Algerian families when he declared that the Libyan president pardoned their relatives and events developed to reach a deal between both the Algerian and Libyan authorities to exchange prisoners so as they complete their terms in their respective countries.
  •
  • For his part, M Kessentini said” M Ghachir is wrong to hold such statements because he ignores the ins and outs of the case”, adding that the families get in touch with his institution which raised the issue to the foreign affairs ministry explaining the case”.. We have nothing to gain in misleading these families”.
