Algerian foreign affairs minister blames the French right wing for the deterioration of both countries’ relationships
Mourad Medelci

The Algerian foreign affairs minister Mourad Medelci has denied the purported allegations that the Algerian-French relationships were at their nadir, qualifying them as “normal” between two nations linked by historical bounds

  •
  • However, he acknowledged that deep dissentions exist between Algeria and some French circles, declining to name them for their colonial past, saying” Algeria hasn’t problems with the French people but with some lobbies who try to usurp history and occult truths”.
  • Talking in the senate (the upper chamber of the Algerian parliament), the head of the Algerian diplomacy has indicated that the fierce campaign launched against Algeria is led by some influential circles inside the Elysée Palace.
  • M Medelci slammed Francois Fillon cabinet’s decision to create an organization devoted to the “Algerian War” known in Algeria by the ‘” War of Independence” that put an end to the French presence in this country.
  • To recall, the French minister of war veterans, Hubert Falco” has announced the creation the Algerian war memory organization and penned the move as a positive step. The decision pushed the French allies among Algerians to call for the review of historical facts concerning the Algerian independence.
  • The minister’s message goes straightforward to the French president Nicholas Sarkozy who stands as the main advocate of the February23, 2005 law which glorifies the French colonialism in Algeria and defends the confederates.
  • However, the Algerian minister tried to temper tension between the two countries saying “Relationships between Algeria and France are normal and the meeting he had with his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner in New York smoothed over the divergences”.
  • He went on saying that “The Algerian president’s visit to France will be fixed according to the diplomatic agenda of the two presidents as it is the case with all the official visits elsewhere”.
