Algerian Foreign Affairs Minister hits out against military takeover policy

Algerian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mourad Medelci, confirmed Algeria’s position condemning the change of power through unconstitutional rules, pointing out that the statement made by the Minister delegate in charge of Maghrebian and African Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, who had earlier expressed Algeria’s total rejection of grabbing power by using non-democratic and unconstitutional rules, is the same stand upheld on the matter by the Algerian Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Medelcii said during an exclusive interview granted to the International broadcasting channel of the Algerian Radio on Thursday that the minister delegate in charge of Maghrebian and African affairs, warned the Mauritanian special envoy, Colonel Mohamed Oueld Echikh Mohamed Ahmed, that Algeria is against military coups. As for the Arab Maghreb Union, Medleci explained that the Libyan Revolution Leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi had brought with him immediately, as president of the AMU the General-secretary, who contacted Mauritanian officials, and prepared a report, adding; “ I think that the AMU will continue work on the way towards the strengthening of dialogue which  stems from the will to maintain  democracy in Mauritania”. 

Algeria proceeds with its prisoners’ receipt agreement in Libya. Concerning the Algerian prisoners’ file and Libyans in Algeria, Medelci pointed out that on the basis of agreement signed by the two countries in Algiers last May, implementation  will start in the coming weeks, while evoking the possible cooperation between the countries of the sub-Saharan region to fight terrorism, “this cooperation is not only possible but does exist”, recalling that Algeria is “an active part” at the level of the border region, which helps “reach” a “deal” on the vital security issue.

 Medelci  also affirmed that Algerian President Bouteflika had approved during the Malian president’s lastest visit to Algeria a proposal on the holding of a seminar on regional peace and security, pointing out that the encounter was scheduled to be held  next October. He said it would be an opportunity to evaluate the system of cooperation between the countries of the region, and look for ways to strengthen and improve such a cooperation, stressing  that it concerns a “permanent” work which must undergo a qualitative development.
