Algerian Interior Ministry announces revision of electoral lists starting from October 1st

The Algerian Ministry of the Interior and local Assemblies has announced the start of the operation providing for the revision of the electoral lists as from October 1st 2008 in expectation of the upcoming Presidential polls slated for March or April 2009.

• The relevant operation will wind on October 30th, about 6 months before the next Presidentials.
• Apart from the planned Presidential election contest, political observers also widely expect the holding, before the end of the year 2008, of a national referendum on the revision of the 1996 constitution.
• This was confirmed last week by the Head of Government Ahmed Ouyahia who declared in a statement to the press that the projected referendum would be held “very soon”.
