Algerian Parliament refuses special session on Gaza

Algerian Parliament rejected a petition signed by MPs to hold an extraordinary session on Israel’s offensive on Gaza.

  • Earlier, deputies demonstrated at the Parliament’s headquarters urging the government to “take a heroic position to stand by oppressed Palestine’s side.”
  • Parliament issued a statement to condemn the offensive and denounce “inhuman Zionist violations.”
  • The statement urged all Arab, regional and international institutions to “take appropriate measures and stop the aggression.”
  • Parliament said it will approve a resolution in support of Gaza’s people in a plenary session due to be held on January 12.
  • The representative of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) Ahmed Isaad said the resolution and the statement “can not add something concrete to stop the aggression and lift Gaza blockade.”
  • PM Mohamed Hdibi from Ennahdha party considered Parliament’s rejection as an “attempt to make people loosing hope in their representatives.”
  • On March 2003, Algerian Parliament held a special session on the American invasion of Iraq.
