Algerian Party Calls for Early Elections

Labour Party leader Louisa Hanoune called for early legislative elections in Algeria to “restore legitimacy of parliament”. She described the current legislative institution as “illegitimate”.

  • “Parliament lacks legitimacy, thus we need to go for early legislative elections to restore it and have a fully legitimate national assembly”, she said Wednesday in a pres conference.
  • Regarding the amendment of the constitution, Hanoune said she was in favour of changing the fundamental law, as the 1996 constitution restricted political freedom, she said.
  • The Labour Party (leftist) became a major party in parliament through the last legislative elections held in 2007. Despite, it is not represented in cabinet.
  • The National Liberation Front, the National Democratic Rally and the Peace Society Movement form the current government under the presidential alliance.
