Algerian police Director General in a radio program: Promotions are linked to performances and degree level

The Director General of the national police, General Abdelghani Hamel has announced the creation of special committees in charge of supervising the officers’ performances across al the sectors, noting that the officers’ training will pass from 9 months to two years.

  • M Hamel has dwelt on the content of the new statutes ruling the profession endorsed by the Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia and set to be in force as of next January. The Director General has indicated that the new legislation will clearly define the rights as well as the duties of the police officers.

  • He has revealed that the police officers will soon benefit retroactively from substantial compensations according to their performances, risks, work experience and geographical situation “ The performance’s bonus will vary from 0 to 30 % , risks’ compensations will reach 70% of the salary while the work experience’s bonus will  vary from 15 to 90%”

  • Talking on a French radio program, the General has further indicated that the new statutes favor the officers’ degree levels as it links their promotions to their degrees, noting that the police academy will start implementing a new training system over a two year period, which includes brand new syllabus.

  • Abdelgahni Hamel has asserted that he has implemented a brand new strategy since assuming his responsibilities on top of this sector 6 months ago. His approach, he added, consisted in singling out the positive and negative aspects in the sector, noting that he has implemented the appropriate measures to modernize it.

  • He further indicated that the percentage of women in the security forces doesn’t exceed 8% totalling 17 thousands out of 170 thousands that counts the sector. 1200 new policewomen are recruited every year, adding that this number is set to increase in the future.
