Algerian President Bouteflika expected to boycott Mediterranean Union meeting

Reliable sources told Echorouk that Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will boycott the invitation of his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy to attend the launching of Mediterranean Union for project on July 13th.

  •
  •
  • The date comes in coincidence with France’s National day on July 14th.  The same sources attributed the reason to historical considerations and presence of Israeli Prime Minister Ehoud Olmert in the meeting.
  •
  •
  • Libyan leader Maamar Kadafi and Syrian President Bachar Alassad will be absent in the meeting while President Bouteflika will honour excellent successful candidates for the baccalaureate 2008, according to the same sources.
  •
  • The French president, who presented a formal invitation to the Israeli Prime Minister to attend the meeting- as confirmed by AFP last Thursday, asked all his guests to stay in Paris to attend the French National ceremony on July 14th. This is considered as an affront to many countries or France’s former colonies because it refuses to apologize for their people for the crimes committed during the occupation.
  •
  • Jacques Chirac’s successor has refused to apologize for French colonies since arrived to the Elysees Palace last year. Yet, he has always repeated speeches on tolerance between peoples, leaving history as it was and treating problems with a future vision.
