Algerian President Bouteflika refuses to confirm participation in Mediterranean Union summit

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika Sunday refused to confirm whether his country will participate in the Mediterranean Union project.

  • All it seems that the visiting French Prime Minister Francois Fillon could not convince President Bouteflika to participate
  • In the Mediterranean Union summit due to be held on July 13 in Paris. Algeria is likely to take all time before making an appropriate decision in this “sensitive” issue.
  • Asked about the participation of Algeria in the summit, President Bouteflika told journalists that everything will appear with time. This indicates that he still has reservations on the participation in this new entity initiated by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
  • The North African country expresses an absolute reject to turn the Mediterranean Union into a means to normalise ties with Israel.
