Algerian president squeezes his ministers dry to respect their commitments

The Algerian president Abdelazziz Bouteflika is carrying the assessments of his ministers to evaluate their sectors of activities as part of the five year program as he doesn’t limit himself to hearing their reports but also asking them about their future prospects.

This year’s meetings come two months after the endorsement of the president of the giant budget dedicated to this program and fixed the cost of each sector as part of an overall cost estimated at $ 286 billion.

-
If some sectors covered more than a five year program to be extended to a whole decade on account of the giant projects included, others are lagging behind and still completing the projects registered as part of the first presidential mandate like the one dealing with Algiers’ subway and many others in the same sector.

The assessments initiated by the president have become a tradition on the Algerian political scene, through which the head of state confronts his ministers trying to get the least details about their sectors instead of reading lengthy reports that proved to be erroneous.

The president has, in several occasions, cut short to his ministers’ overstated reports during his tours across different corners of the country to an extent that he made it clear to them during an allocution before the government’s high ranking officials in 2007, and asked them to reconsider their estimates.
