Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika

Pending his visit to Qatar , the Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika made an interview to the Qatari newspaper “Al Arab” in which he declared “Every constitution subjected to revision to make it adaptable with the new orientations of a state to build a democratic society in which the population can live in modernity and luxury”.

The president’s words are here to confirm his “opinion” concerning the 1996 constitution which he said about that he “hated, but respected it”, before expressing openly in front of top military officials in 2006 his “hopeâ€Â to invite the Algerian people to cast his vote for a revision in a referendum.

Among the themes raised by the president, the 2009 presidential elections, whom he said that they “will take place within the constitutional period, with god”s will” and went on saying that “he will do his utmost to organize free elections and give the Algerian citizen his right to chose his president freely”.

As to his candidacy, the president let the door open and avoided to talk about it before proceeding to the revision of the “sick” constitution, which stipulates that the president has no right to more than two terms in office.

The interview given to the Qatari newspaper comes after the article on Algeria published by the French magazine “Jeune Afrique” which it warped up the president’s achievements during his era including the come back of Algeria on the international scene, the macro economic achievements as well as national reconciliation.

In this respect, M Bouteflika declared that this policy enabled the return to normalcy after years of violence and the reintegration of thousands of young people brainwashed by Algeria’s enemies.
