Algerian Prince Abdel kader Preceded Geneva Treaty For Prisoners’ Rights

Participants in an international colloquium on “Prince Abdel kader and human rights” at Algeria’s Nation Council unanimously agreed on the fact that he was the first to plan the human rights concept before the Geneva International Treaty on prisoners’ rights.

• The participants in the colloquium, which was organized beside the second centenary of El Amir Abdelkader explained that he was a man of state and war, but also a man of peace, dialogue and thought.
• In his presentation on “the universal human prince”, diplomat Buallam Bessayeh focused on Al Amir’s contribution and role in Damascus and Lebanon Mountain’s war. He saved 12 thousand Christians from death in 1860 and contributed with his expertise in extinguishing the sedition fire as well as overcoming the crisis that was about to engulf the region.
• The diplomat evoked El Emir’s qualities in those positions and said : “today, we are invited to draw inspiration from The Prince more than ever as they are positions which reflect the true Islam, Islam of tolerance and solidarity”.
• For his part, Idriss Al Jazairi stopped by El Emir Abdul Kader’s approach on human rights concept through the foundation of the charter for the preservation of prisoners’ rights and dignity before the Geneva Treaty, which was only formed in 1864. El AMIR approved a number of provisions in 1837 obliging “Any Algerian who cauches a French prisoner must treat him in a good way; otherwise he will be subjected to punishments. Any French arrested in battle is considered as war prisoner.”     
• He also stopped by Abdel Kader’s dialogue with the Algerian Archbishop “Depeche” inviting him to free a French prisoner and EL AMIR replied “in your capacity as Allah’s servant and a friend of worshipers,you should have asked for the release of all Christian prisoners and not only one. Then he set them all free.
• The colloquium also saw similar forums which highlighted the international dimension of AL Emir’s qualities which the president invited for in his letter read out by his advisor Boughazi. He urged to get inspired from “EL Emir’s message in these turbulent times characterized by being confined to oneself and non- tolerance”.
