Algerian released detainee: he went to study in Saudi Arabia, found himself at Gitmo

“Many detainees who have been released from Guantanamo talked about life there and we do not need to repeat the same words,†said an Algerian detainee at Gitmo, released few days ago.

Mustapha’s sister Mira said: “He left Bechar (south of Algeria) in 1986 when he was 26 years old to continue his studies in Saudi Arabia. There, he faced many difficulties because he had not filled up necessary documents. That is why he decided to live in Pakistan and work in a charitable relief organization there.”

“He married a Pakistani who gave birth to five children and stayed there until 1991 when he returned back to Algeria,” she added.

According to her, Mustapha had remained in Algeria for six months and came back to Pakistan. Since then, no information was heard on him. “Because of that, his wife called us from there to tell us.”

“They took Mustapha to Guananamo. This event was a real tragedy for the family. Then he sent two letters telling us that he had been taken to Guantanamo for unknown reasons with his cousin there although they were far from politics.”

It was believed that Mustapha Hamlili was the only person from Bechar who had been taken to Guantanamo, but a woman approached with a sad face and said: “I am waiting for the release of my son.”
