Algerians released from Guantanamo join their families

Houari Abderrahmane and Mustapha Hamlile, two Algerians released from Guantanamo Bay joined Tuesday their families in Algiers and Bechar ( south of Algeria).

  • The Algerians appeared in a court in Algiers and were put under judicial control on charges of belonging to a terrorist group active abroad.
  • Well-informed sources told Echorouk that both Houari and Moustafa arrived to Algeria on July 2nd they had been released on June 30th.
  • Mustapha Hamlil, 49, travelled to Pakistan in 1986 to continue his studies, his sister says, but the U.S. army arrested him in 2002 alleging that he belonged to Al-Qaeda and he was taken to Guantanamo. “We have not heard from him until last July when the International Red Cross informed us that he had been released,” said Mustapha’s sister.
  • Houari Abderrahman, 28, went to Pakistan in 2002 and was accused of belonging to the Taliban group and Al-Qaeda.
