Algerians voice anger on Gaza

Some 500,000 people took to the streets in the Algerian capital Algiers after Friday’s prayer to protest against Israel’s offensive in Gaza which killed more than 700 Palestinians so far.

  • The protesters condemned the Israeli crimes and called for supporting the Palestinian resistance and Gaza’s people.
  • They marched to the main avenues in the city criticising Arab governments and describing them as “betrayers.”
  • Some of them were stopped by anti-riot forces while other demonstrators continued their march in some areas in Algiers.
  • The government banned demonstrations in 2001 following bloody clashes between security forces and protestors in a demonstration organised by Berber activists.
  • In other Algerian provinces, people also demonstrated in support of Palestinians.
  • President of the International Union for Muslim Scholars Youssef El Karadaoui had urged Muslims to make Friday an international day in support of Gaza.
