Tunisian Parliament’s vice-speaker in charge of communication Munji Harbaoui said a tax on Algerian vehicles on borders will be banned as from December 31st.

“The tax will be banned via the Financial Act which will be presented to Parliament’s members. After December 31st this year, Algerians will not have to pay it to leave Tunisia,” Harbaoui told Echorouk.

“I received a confirmation from the head of government Youcef Chahed as I have talked to him many times. The tax on vehicles-related governmental decision was issued in 2014. It was a precipitated decision and was meant to seek funding for the Treasury. Yet, it was not enough studied. The current government believes that it is necessary to revise it,” he added.

He expressed hope that Algeria would not apply its decision to impose a similar tax.

Speaking about his vision about Algerian-Tunisian relations reality, Harbaoui said brotherhood between the two countries is bigger than any crisis. “Algeria is a sister, a friend and a guard for Tunisia. Relation between the two countries are not new and will not be shaken by anyone.”

Tunisian tourism office’s representative in Algeria Bassam El Ouartani said the number of Algerians who have entered his country since the beginning of the year reached 1.2 million.

“In August, 450,000 Algerian tourists visited Tunisia compared to 195,000 in July,” he told Echorouk.
