Algeria's south : 16 riots suspects released

Attorney General ordered to release 16 suspects who had been held for getting involved in riots sparked in Algeria's southern area of Beriane, Ghardaia province. After days of intercommunity violence, a total calm was restored in Beriane on Sunday’s morning.

A reconciliation meeting was organized on Saturday in the area where notables and presidents of civil associations urged to get rid of racism and sectarian conflicts.

A commission was set up to deal with the damage caused by the riots as well as a commission of doctors and psychologists who started treating people under shock.

For his part, Ghardaia’s prefect expressed his dissatisfaction over the way in which media had covered Beriane’s riots.

“Beriane is not Kabul and it will never be so,” he said.

According to him, the security situation in the area is under control. “The State is present to face the recent upheavals.”
