Algiers 14th International Book fair, which take place in the 5 July stadium from October 27 to November 6, welcomes publishers from 25 countries on Tuesday (October the 27th), as some 120.000 titles are presented at the fair. It draws many visitors, including children accompanied by their parents, elderly, and especially women, who came to “watch” the books and possibly purchase some books from the exhibitors.

• The opportunity is good for the students and academics to find the right book; however, the problem is that they are very expensive, varying between 3.000 and 6.000 dinars, particularly for the books of medicine. “Even if some people find them expensive, they are all affordable”, an exhibitor said.

• In some stands pre-school and children books seem to be unbeatable regarding sales. Children and parents had the opportunity to discover, or may be rediscover classics like Kalila wa Dimna (The Mirror for Princes) by Ibn al-Moqafaa, Kitab al-hayaouan (The Book of Animals) by Al-Jahiz, the Thousand and One Nights, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

• More attention was given to religious books too, as their prices vary from one book to another. “I bought this Coran book with 1200 dinars, I think it’s expensive”, Linda said.

• Still, shelves were packed with books about religion and religious ideologies, just not offensive or provocative or against law, organizer said.

• Many countries participated in the fair, as Lebanon and Syria were among the most present, “We have only Arabic and French books”, a Lebanese exhibitor said.

• Contrary to the Arabic and French book, the English book is nearly absent, being present only in two stands, presented by Oxford University; as it is very expensive too; “I want to buy this big Oxford dictionary; but I can’t it’s much expensive, and I’m a student from the middle class”, Karim says.
