Algiers recoreded over 43.000 crimes in 2008
There was an alarming increase of criminality in Algiers where more than 16.000 involved in more than 34.000 crimes. Cases of murder and theft rose to 40 cases and 125 involved, mostly young people and adolescents, were arrested.

Security authorities of Algiers warned Monday during the evaluation of their 2008 activities, the spread of cars’ theft operations which rose to 763 cases, where 377 cars were recovered after rapid complaints by citizens and proliferation of security checkpoints which blocked robbery gangs’ activity, which usually choose isolated places in order to attack their victims.

Mobile phones’ theft operation also noticed a rise compared to the last years, 2668 mobile phones were stolen during one year, and most victims were females.

Prostitution in Algiers also recorded a spread, particularly in public places and beaches as well as in some illegal houses. Security authorities recorded 121 cases in which 121 people, mostly youngsters and adolescents, were arrested.

Algiers recorded 21 suicide acts by youngsters and 1269 drug consumption cases, where 1636 people were arrested and 728 kg of cannabis, 82 gm of heroine, about 1 kg of cocaine, and more than 22.000 hallucination pills were seized.

Simple or less dangerous crimes such as, illegal immigration and illegal residence increased to 207 cases after it exceeded 706 cases in 2007.
