Algiers Tramway fully operational by mid – 2010

The works for the achievement of the long-awaited Algiers Tramway are forging ahead by reaching an achievement rate of up to 70% in some stations notably in the main line of Bordj El Kiffan on the eastern outskirts of the Algerian capital.

  • This major project, extending on 23 kilometers and serving a total of 28 stations, is slated to become entirely operational by late June 2010.
  • This was confirmed Sunday by the Algerian Transport Minister, Amar Tou, who paid on the occasion an inspection visit to the Bordj El Kiffan future tramway – line where a team of workers is relentlessly  buckling to the task round the clock.
  • The Minister saw for himself during his inspection tour  the steady progress made in the achievement works on the spot.
  • The Algiers Tramway, a clean and reliable mode of transport, will offer a transport capacity of 6.800 passengers per hour and 185.000 passengers per day that is about 50 million users annually.
  • According to Amar Tou, the overall cost of the project is estimated at 50 million dinars (500.000 Euros).
  • The Minister indicated that there were plans to build similar modern tramways in other major Algerian cities including Oran, Constantine, Sétif, Annaba, Sidi Bel Abbes and Mostaganem in the very near future.
