An investigation committee to start an inquiry over the burning of the Algerian flag in Cairo

An investigation committee, including Algerian and Egyptian lawyers has been set up the day before yesterday, to start an inquiry over the burning g of the Algerian flag by Egyptian lawyers in Cairo few days ago.

  • Meanwhile, the Arab Lawyers’ Executive Board has denounced from Damascus the ignoble act and strongly condemned the “sullying of any Arab flag across the Arab world”. The committee is set to forward the investigation outcome within a month.
  • The decision came as result of a lobbying conducted by the Algerian lawyers who took part to the Arab Lawyers’ Union’s meeting in Damascus, after fierce opposition from the Egyptian front that tried to rule out the Algerian request to add a point condemning the burning of the Algerian flag into the final resolutions of Damascus meeting.
  • While the participants were about to ratify the resolutions, the Egyptian lawyer, in his quality as the president of the Union, imposed his veto to the move prompting the Algerian delegation to threaten to withdraw definitely from the Union if the provision is not included in the resolutions.
  • At a time when the Algerian lawyers were barred from entering the conference room for alleged “security and organizational” reasons, the head of the delegation Abdelmadjid Sellini had clearly announced “skipping the condemnation from the final resolutions, would mean that the Algerian flag was assassinated in Cairo and buried in Damascus”, accusing some Arab parties of slanting to the Egyptian side.
  • The Algerian delegation’s pressure led to the delay of the closing session of the meeting, slated for 8 pm, until midnight. The lawyers who were not allowed to attend the restricted meeting, that took place behind closed doors, filled the corridors with slogans like” Algerian people is a Muslim and is part of the Arab ideology”.
