Association Agreement with EU: Algeria to review dismantling of customs

Algeria will review the dismantling of customs as part of the Association Agreement with the European Union because of imbalanced out of hydrocarbons exchanges, commerce minister said on Thursday.

• “The government decided to review the calendar of the dismantling of customs for industrial products and preferential advantages relating to agricultural and food-produce products,” the Algerian news agency reported citing Mustapha Benbada.

• According to the minister, the revision is meant to limit the negative impact of the dismantling of customs.
•  
• “The Algerians has three negotiations round with the European Union to pass the Algerian suggestions. They aimed at taking exceptional measures to protect agricultural and industrial sectors from competition,” Benbada told senators.

• He added that Algeria asked for the implementation of a procedure meant to enable the partner to have recourse to preventive measures for five yeas as well as three years of exemption.

• The dismantling of customs has cost almost $2.5 billion since the Association Agreement came into force.
