Attempt to smuggle 40 rifles, 6 binoculars and huge quantities of gunpowder foiled in western Algeria

A total of hunting rifles, 32 binoculars and more than 30 kg of gunpowder were caught with passengers in January- November in an attempt to smuggle them in the port and airport of Oran (west of Algiers), according to Customs.

• An attempt to smuggle 400 cartridges and six guns were also foiled. They were caught with 16 passengers and an Algerian man living abroad aged between 60 and 80 years old.

• Most of the suspects hid them in cars while others put them in their luggage. Tight surveillance in the port and high technologies in the airport reduce chances to smuggle those materials.

• A total of 12 weapons smuggling cases were treated in the same period. Of them, 7 cases were discovered in Passengers Department in the airport.

• Investigations showed that most of the suspects had already been involved in similar cases.
