Bad weather: deaths, asphyxia and blocked roads in Algeria
A number of people were killed in traffic accidents, others died of asphyxia and many roads were blocked by the bad weather in northern and eastern Algeria.
Many families living in shanty towns are concerned about possible mudslide following heavy rains and snow. The bad weather is expected to continue until next week.
Death, asphyxia and no school because of snow
Heavy snow which hit northern and eastern areas in Algeria on Wednesday’s night blocked many roads and suspended schools in different provinces. The Civil Protection forces have been mobilized to help people.
Residents in the province of Constantine (east of Algeria) found difficulties in driving or walking because of the heavy snow and strong wind. Most of pupils in schools and schools in the New Town of Ali Mendjeli could not join their classes.
Press attaché at the Civil Protection General Department Nassim Bernaoui said traffic accidents killed 4 people and injured 10 due to the flooding rains which hit Algeria. Roads were blocked because of snow in the provinces of: Ghilizane, Skikda, Setif, Medea and Biskra.
A man died of asphyxia and 7 people were about to die of gas in the province of Bordj Bouarreridj (east of Algeria), he added.
