Bamako attack aims at perturbing peace process in Sahel: diplomatic source
An Algerian diplomatic source said Friday’s Bamako attack aimed at perturbing the peace process in the Sahel region and foil a meeting on the crisis in Mali.
The Algerian diplomats who survived the attack were taken to a safe place, according to the same source.
An official at the foreign ministry told Echorouk Algerian authorities did not reveal the diplomatic delegation’s identity for security reasons.
The six diplomats formed a commission in charge of following up and implementing the peace agreement in Mali.
They were supposed to attend a meeting on the crisis in the region ahead of another meeting due to be held on December 1st.
According to the same source, the Algerian authorities will decide whether the delegation would continue its mission or would come back to Algeria.
“Algeria is convinced in the peace process and committed with the international community to support this agreement till the end,” said the official.
“Algeria is aware of the possible difficulties which might be posed by terror groups to hinder the peace agreement,” he added.
Asked if the Bamako attack targeted the Algerian diplomats only, he said it was meant to perturb the peace process in the Sahel region and hit any attempt to restore safety and stability.
Earlier, a terror group attacked a hotel in Bamako and held six Algerian diplomats as hostage before they had been released, hours later.
