On the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Bouteflika urged to reinforce the presumption of innocence, to limit the use of police custody and to affirm a mondatory medical check-up upon request from the detained person.

He also called for the reinforcement of defence rights for persons appearing in court, the improvement of detainees’ rights and their social reintegration.

“That can be done by the reinforcement of guarantees of rights related to citizenship, promotion of economic, social and cultural rights,” said the president.
