Boutros Ghali:The sending of a UN investigation to Algeria is not in keeping with the law
Boutros Ghali

The former UN secretary general and current chairman of the Egyptian human rights council Boutros Boutros Ghali has expressed support for Algeria’s principled stance rejecting the sending of a UN commission to probe the terrorist bombing which targeted UN offices in Algiers late last year.

Boutos Ghali said that such a UN probe was contrary to the law stressing that the UN was not entitled to conduct an investigation in any country of the world without the prior consent of the authorities concerned.

Boutos Ghali asserted that he had voiced his full backing for Algeria ’s steadfast position on the issue in several international forums.

It should noted that several senior Algerian officials including the Head of government Abdellaziz Belkhadem, the Interior minister Yazid Zerhouni and foreign minister Mourad Medelci had strongly inveighed against the UN unilateral move stressing that Algeria had nothing to hide and was able to shed all the light, on her own, on the terrorist bombing by bringing those responsible to justice.

On the human rights file, Boutros Ghali said that the culture of democracy and human rights promotion was still in the making in Arab countries and that more efforts should be made by all and sundry to achieve this lofty objective.
