Campaign to boycott the imported frozen meat to avoid suspicion in Ramadan
A rise in the price of red and white is expected to reach about 100 dinars during the holy month of Ramadan, and before it with a few days, as the prices are expected to be stabilized again in the second week, Spokesman for the Federation of Algerian Merchants and Craftsmen, Hadj Taher Boulanouar, said on Saturday, during a press conference.
“Government does not have any mechanisms or schemes for the short or long terms in this area, but to resort to cover the deficit in the final minutes through imports, which it encourages more than it does with domestic production that has not noticed any rise in spite of the ministry’s recent official statements.”
“It is time to review the government’s economic policy, with taking action to facilitate the production instead of resorting to importation as an emergency solution. Official statements by the Ministry of Agriculture are contradictory regarding the high production of meat this year by 100.000 tons, i.e with an increase of 350.000 tons in the past two years to 450.000 tons this year, with evidence that it was not matched by a rise in the number of producers, and not even a drop in the price of meat. The import bill continues to increase, which does not reflect what was said by the Ministry of Agriculture.”
“This year’s value went up from 20.000 tons from last year to 30.000 tons, and the import bill is expected to rise to 40 tons this year, which is contrary to official statements, concerning the lifting of production. Calling upon the government to get rid of the pressures that are practiced by importers and stay free from them, whether the matter is related to specialists in meat, wheat or powder milk, who exercise a monopoly by remaining at the top of importers to thwart domestic production.”
“As for the price of meat in Ramadan, a rise between 50 to 100 dinars for the red meat to reach between 340 and 350 dinars for white meat in Ramadan, as to return to stability in the range of 250 and 280 dinars in the second week of the holy month of Ramadan, at a time the union noticed the boycott of dealers by different cities of the country, who have expressed their refusal to sell frozen meat that is imported and marketed to the citizen in Ramadan, because of the uncertainties around it.”
“Ministry of Agriculture should raise the price of frozen meat between 300 and 400 dinars as a maximum limit, especially since such kind of meat is based on the types and options, as the type that is exported from India is absolutely the worst compared to the type that is exported from the Netherlands.”
