Cash flows to boost the Algerian culture

On the sidelines of the annual hearing sessions dedicated to the different sectors of activities, the Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika ordered the government to give more importance to the promotion of culture, hailing the major achievements recorded so far in the field of restorations and the classification of ancient monuments and historical sites.

  • The culture minister, Khalida Toumi laid out the corner stones of an ambitious program dedicated to the development of this sector whose budget was four folded over the current decade. The budget allotted to this sector was estimated at 4 billion Algerian Dinars in 1999 to hike reaching nearly 15 billion Algerian Dinars in 2009.
  • The minister seized the opportunity to lay out four major pending projects dedicated to the capital city Algiers, including the Arab-Latin America library, the Arab Center of Archaeology, Algiers Opera and the Great Exhibition Hall.
  • As to the future prospects, Mrs Toumi mentioned two major cultural events, namely; The second African Culture Festival of Algiers in 2009 and Telemcen, Capital of Islamic Culture in 2011.
