Civil service statistics 2008

The number of civil servants in Algeria went up to 1,603,994 in 2008 from 1,553,546 in 2007 after the government had opened 50,448 new jobs, according to figures from the General Department of Civil Service.

  • The figures show that 323,629 of the civil servants hold senior positions. Their base salaries start from 29,970 DZ while the number of executive agents is 72,623 and their salaries are from 20,385 to less.
  • The number of permanent civil servants increased to 1,336,736 in 2008 from 1,298,011 in 2007. Contractual civil servants were estimated at 156,097 in 2008 increasing from 139,371 in 2007.
  • On the other hand, the number of temporary civil servants dropped to 111,161 in 2008 from 116,060 in 2007.
  • Education sector counts the largest number of civil servants as they hold 500,901 positions followed by the interior ministry staff with 497,473. Health sector comes third with 196,625 followed by higher education sector with 101,015 and finances with 64,859.
  • Permanent: 1,336,736
