Samuel Huntington, a political scientist well-known for his book “The Clash of Civilizations” died at age 81 on Wednesday.

Huntington taught for 58 years Harvard University before retiring in 2007. His research and teaching focused on American government, democratization, military politics, strategy, and civil-military relations.

In his book “The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order,” published in 1996, he raised controversy among international relations theorists.

The book says the world is divided into rival civilizations on the basis of religious traditions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Confucianism. It also says competition and conflict among them is inevitable.
