Commemoration in Mascara of 178th anniversary of allegiance to Emir Abdelkader
MASCARA (Algeria)- The province of Mascara celebrated Saturday the 178th anniversary of the first allegiance sworn to Emir Abdelkader, leader of the popular resistance against French colonization.
The ceremony commemorating the historical event was attended by Minister of State, President of the Republic’s Personal Representative Abdelaziz Belkhadem, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Rachid Benaissa, Secretary-General of the National Union of Algerian Farmers Mohamed Alioui, Secretary-General of the National Organization of Children of Chouhada (martyrs) Tayeb El Houari, in addition to local officials.
Shrubs were planted on that occasion at the historical site of Derdara tree in the region of Ghriss (20 km of Mascara), where the “Moubayaâ” (allegiance) took place on 27 November 1832.
