Despite their presence in education and security: Algerian women’s chances in politics do not exceed 7 percent

Chances of Algerian women to participate in the administrative and political life and contribution in the political decision-making are few and do not reflect their skills in various fields in Algeria, as an official report shows that Algerian women occupy only 7.7 percent of the high positions.

  • The report by the National Institute of Public Health of December 2009 highlighted the status of Algerian women at the political, executive and administrative levels, showing their scant presence in government positions 7.7 percent, and concluded that they represent a few percentages in government, elected councils and even in civil society, as they suffer lack of communication and access to information despite their competencies.
  •
  • The report also shows that Algerian woman do not participate in politics and if she is a member of a political party she is often marginalized and not recognized and charged for passive tasks.
  •
  • The report on the participation of Algerian women in the parliamentary, party and ministerial life shows that only 30 women are MPs in the Algerian People’s Assembly, representing only 7.7 percent of the total number of MPs, four in parliament, two heads of political parties, and three ministers, as well as two heads of municipalities out of 1541 municipalities in Algeria.
  •
  • Although their weak presences in political activity and despite the existing competencies, Algerian women’s chances seem much more available in the professional life, as they occupy 60 percent of the vocational training and half of the university professors.
  •
  • Algerian women also represent 30 percent of the total number of judges, 60 percent of whom hold positions of responsibility. It seems, according to the same report that the security sector contains a large number of women especially in the recent years, for example the police sector employs 700 women every year since 1998, and gendarmerie began recruiting 61 women every year since 2004.
