Parliament decided to raise its members’ allowance starting from May amid demands among different sector workers for pay raise.

An official document shows that Parliament held a meeting on January 13th chaired by Larbi Ould Khelifa and decided the pay raise. On March 4th, the decision was officially approved.

This comes as Parliament’s speaker Ould Khelifa denied media reports about pay raise for deputies.

According to the same document, accommodation allowance was raised to 85,000 DZ per month from 63,000 DZ. Free meals were also raised to 1,000 compared to 200 while members of Parliament pay 600 DZ only.

Parliament’s vice-speaker Mohamed Djemi told Echorouk on Friday the pay raise is baseless and it was no more than a suggestion due to accommodation allowance. “Deputies’ salary is not decided by Parliament but by the cabinet after the president’s approval.”

However, sources at Parliament say the pay raise will be applied.
