Dozens of Algerian journalists attend a sit-in on World Press Freedom Day

Dozens of journalists gather in Algiers Freedom of Expression Square in a sit-in here on Tuesday calling government to accelerate the achievement of their professional and social demands.

The Movement for a “National Initiative for the Dignity of Journalists” said in a statement that six workshops will finish with a list of proposals that will be delivered to the authorities in order to include it among the new reforms in the profession, media law, advertising, polls, initiated by government to regulate the profession of journalism, with focus on the ethics of the profession and lift the criminalization on journalism.

A number of directors of publication and general-mangers attended the sit-in and discuss the prospects of the profession in light of the protest movements in various fields, coinciding with the World Press Freedom day.

Journalists, representing all sectors, called upon government to accelerate the provision of adequate working conditions for journalists and keep pace with modernization at the profession and social levels, and improving the social and political situation for media, as it is suffering chaos and deviation from its goals and objectives in serving society, making the journalist a victim of the absence of control in all sectors.
