This half victory secured by Cheb Mami comes after the issuing by the French penitentiary administration of several assessment reports testifying to the exemplary behaviour of Mami (whose real name is Mohamed Khelifati) throughout his detention since July 2009.
- The Algerian singer has just benefited from a partial liberation which will be automatically translated into reality if the final decision on the matter by the Melun tribunal is duly confirmed on October 12th.
- Cheb Mami who has already spent 25 months in prison, that is half of the sentence inflicted upon him by the French justice, has recently introduced a request for a release on parole pointing to his right to parenthood as he is the father of a little boy.
- Cheb Mami’s much-publicized trial, then his imprisonment in a Paris detention center since July 2009 at the end of a day of debates, had made sensation on all the news media in France and elsewhere.
- 14 months later, Cheb Mami, aged 43, is now eagerly awaiting his possible extraction from prison just after the Melun tribunal’s final ruling slated to be issued on the 12th of next month.
- Furthermore, Cheb Mami’s lawyer also confirmed the sending in July 2010 by the detained singer of a letter to the French President Nicholas Sarkozy appealing for a presidential pardon.
