Echourok’s photographer Halim Maamar related the difficult moments he went through along with the Algerian delegation that took part to the humanitarian convoy which was stormed by the Israeli commando in the international waters, showing the photos he took at the very first moments of the raid and the blood-drenched victims in addition to the first aids operations.

  • He recounted the tremendous difficulties he had to face during his mission starting with the Israeli troops’ checks with dogs and how he succeeded to slip past the scanner with his camera’s memory card unnoticed.
  • The photographer has indicated that he brought with him two cameras one big and another small and he was started taking photos right at the beginning of the travel, but as soon as he heard about the probability of an Israeli raid on the convoy, he resorted to hide it in his suitcase and carried on taking photos with the smallest camera that he was holding in his hand all the time.
  • He went on saying that he was even praying with the camera in his hand, that’s why he succeeded to take the photos of the Israeli raid and the firs aids operations carried out by Marmara’s staff in favour of the injured before being transported on planes.
  • The photographer took off the memory card from the camera and hides it in the sole of his shoe making sure not out put the three memory cards all together. Fortunately, he succeeded to retrieve two wrapped in a plastic bag while the third one was detected by the scanner since it was wrapped in a simple tissue.
  • Halim Maamar went on saying that the Israeli security forces were intimidating them with a series of questions in relation to the real drives that pushed them to take part to what they dubbed as “terrorist” campaigns and their attempt to enter Gaza illegally, according to them.
  • The photographer has asserted that the whole delegation went through the worst humiliations including the spitting on the face by the colonizers that they met on their way after the end of the interrogations.
