Foot-brawl: A violent melee breaks out after Libya 0 – Algeria 1
The weekend’s qualifiers in the African Cup of Nations football competition served up a full compliment of good, bad and ugly moments.
- For the ‘good’ there was Papiss Cisse’s super header for Senegal against the Ivory Coast, whilst Tunisia forward Saber Khelifa supplied the ‘bad’ with a comical assist for Sierra Leone. As for the ‘ugly’, that was provided for in a post-match brawl between Libyan and Algerian players in Casablanca stadium.
- After Algeria had snatched a late but meritorious 1-0 win over their North African rivals, a mass brawl erupted on the pitch between the two sets of players at the instigation of some disgruntled Libyan players who were upset at their last-minute setback versus the Algerian Fennecs.
- If truth be told the brawl was slightly tame. It generally consisted of players either squaring up to each other without throwing any serious punches, or alternatively it produced games of cat-and-mouse around the pitch which also failed to spill to into any real fights.
- Nevertheless, the scenes of aggression touched off by some Libyan players were a blot on an otherwise peaceful match.
