Football / “ES Sétif setback at home vs Tunisia's Espérance triggers fans' anger”

The surprising one – nil defeat suffered by the ES Sétif squad on Saturday night at home against Espérance of Tunis in a first-leg semi-final match of the Arab champions league competition, had the effect of a bombshell among their numerous supporters who did not recognize their team in the face of the indomitable Tunisian players who finally carried the day with flying colours.

• The ES Sétif fans who are still under a state of shock voiced their deep anger at the paltry performance of their squad versus the Tunisian players who were better organized and showed a lot of resilience and stamina on the pitch until the referee’s final whistle.

• Disgruntled supporters have blamed Coach Azzedine Aït Djoudi for the team’s setback and seriously called into question his tactical scheme.

• Aït Djoudi said a in the wake of the match that he assumed responsibility for his tactical choice while stressing that the players themselves should also be held accountable as they did not apply fully the instructions on the pitch.

• Numerous supporters of ES Sétif are now calling for the sacking of the head coach and his assistant arguing they had failed in their mission to lead the squad to the final and a third Arab cup victory.

• However, some less pessimistic supporters still believe that by taking up again with their usual fine play, the ES Sétif squad could turn the scales in their favour in the April 26th second – leg match in Tunis as they had brilliantly done against other Arab teams in the same competition over the past few years.
